What Is the Level of Concords and Discords for BPH Consensus Statements Including IPSS Relevance?

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a global health concern due to its dramatic rise in epidemiological burden. As for India, there has been an alarming 90.9% increase in BPH cases from 2000 to 2019. Recently, an Indian panel of urologists used the Delphi methodology to review literature evidence and expert opinions, reaching a consensus on statements covering various aspects of BPH.

The first statement was that ‘BPH is one of the most common causes of lower urinary tract symptoms in males.’ The evidence type was systematic review and meta-analysis, and the consensus level was 100%. Sixty-six percent of the urologists strongly agreed with the statement.

Another statement was that the ‘International Prostate Symptom Score is commonly used to assess symptom severity in BPH’, and the evidence included American Urological Association guidelines, systematic review, and meta-analysis. Now, for this one, there was a lot of variation in the consensus, with 11.1% of the urologists strongly agreeing to the statement, 22.2% of them agreeing, 44.4% of them neither agreed nor disagreed, 11.1% strongly disagreed, and again 11.1% disagreed to the statement.

Conclusion

An Indian expert panel has reached a consensus on statements on diverse aspects of BPH.  Varied statements in the BPH consensus have diverse concords and discords among the clinicians.
